For this project, I worked with world champion kitesurfer James Carew in search of some of the longest left-hand waves in the world, which led us to Pacasmayo, Peru.
The waves here can run for over a kilometre, creating a unique and extremely challenging environment to film in. I experimented with a range of approaches, from drone and long-lens shooting to in-water filming, but strong currents made water-based work almost impossible. The solution was to move onto a jet ski.
Positioned in front of the wave, I was able to shoot backwards, head-on, with James carving powerfully up and down the face behind me. This setup allowed us to capture dynamic, high-speed sequences and some of the strongest kitesurfing footage from the trip. Pacasmayo truly lives up to its reputation as home to some of the longest waves in the world.
